The question that is rarely asked: can games be defined as art? Most would argue that they can’t. How can you compare Candy Crush to Van Gogh’s Starry Night? I would agree to the point that just like not all strokes of paint on a canvas are art, not every game is art. However, over time, games have grown to become so such more than just entertainment. It takes nearly all forms of art to make a AAA game title, you have storywriters who come up with intense stories that say more than some Oscar nominated films out there. At times a whole orchestra is used to compose the soundtracks for games, you have visual artists who spend hours adding minor details that may just be overlooked, you have voice actors, and intense dialogues. All to create an interactive experience that is nothing less than art. Take games like Shadow of the Colossus or Bioshock, they deliver a unique story through beautiful visuals that if it was put in any other form like a book or a movie it wouldn’t have even been heard about. Maxout is a magazine dedicated to explore gaming and provide its audience with everything they would need to know about games, the industry, and also give out reviews on hardware. I want to showcase the passion that goes into video games and that’s the type of passion I want to put into this magazine.
Happy reading!
